The giants fell; the average company didn't

Since Oct 6 the chip stocks fell 18% and the Nasdaq 100 fell 10%, but the average S&P company (the green line, where every company counts the same) went up 3%. Money didn't leave the market. It left a few AI and chip names and went into banks and consumer stocks.

Who did the damage: AMD −25.5%, Alphabet −19.5%, Micron −18.2%, Meta −15.9%, Nvidia −13.6%, Oracle −12.5%, Broadcom −11.6%. Who held: Apple −0.5%, Microsoft −1.6%, Amazon −2.2%, Tesla +4.7%.

What it meansA rotation inside the market, not a collapse of it. This is the third 10% Nasdaq drop of 2026 (March, July, now).

34 times since 1985 — most ended between −10% and −15%

Each bar is one Nasdaq drop of 10% or more, and its length is how far it fell at the worst close. 19 of 34 bottomed between −10% and −15%; the typical one bottomed around −14%. The blue bars are drops shaped like today's: fast, with the long-term trend still up (price above its 200-day average, the average of the last ~10 months). Those bottomed around −12%, and 12 of 16 never got past −15%. Most were back at a record in about two months.

Four turned into real bear markets: 1987, 1990, 2000 and 2022. It happens. It just isn't the usual case.

When only tech fallsIn 23 past cases like now (Nasdaq down 9%+, S&P down 5% or less), the Nasdaq made a new record within a year 21 times. But the S&P still had its own 10% scare later in the year 13 times. In the four bad cases, the S&P cracked first. Watch the S&P.

VIX 25 is the danger zone; VIX 35–40 has usually been near the bottom

The VIX is the market's fear meter: how much movement options traders expect over the next 30 days. It's at 21. We checked every time since 1990 the VIX first crossed each level. The bar shows how much further the Nasdaq usually fell in the next three months; the thin line shows the worst 1 in 10.

Crossing 20 (where we are) was usually noise: the S&P was higher a month later 81% of the time. Crossing 25 is where scares turned real: two in three went on to 30, and the Nasdaq fell a typical 9% more. Crossing 35–40 usually came near the bottom: three months later the S&P was higher 79–92% of the time.

The big banks flipped from calming the market to pushing it

The banks that sell options have to hedge every day. At the Oct 6 high (green bars) their positions made them buy dips and sell rallies: shock absorbers. Now (red bars) they sell dips and buy rallies: amplifiers. That's why the last two weeks felt so jumpy.

Where the insurance sits: 308,000 QQQ puts at $680, the most of any Nasdaq price, right where we are. On the S&P, 430,000 puts at 7,000 expire Dec 18, the biggest single position in the market, about 7.5% below here. Puts are insurance that pays when price falls; where thousands sit at one price, the hedging around it often slows the fall.

QQQ is sitting on its biggest support zone

QQQ's $680–684 zone stacks four things: the 200-day average, the 38.2% give-back of the March–October rally, the biggest put position on the Nasdaq (308,000 contracts at $680) and last week's low. Below: $670, then $650–661 (half the rally given back plus a monthly gap never filled), then $635 and $613. Above, the line that changes the picture is $699.43.

SPY sits on $749–750 (the put wall and last week's low). Below: $740–745, then $723–730 where the 200-day is, then $705 and $688–700, where the biggest S&P hedge sits. Above, the line is $763.86.

Green = zones where buyers stepped in before · red = where sellers did · blue = the pivot. Each zone is where two or more separate measures agree: untested gaps, rally give-backs, big put positions and where past drops ended. A zone isn't a promise. Watch how price closes there.

One reason to stay careful

The stock-chart history says drops like this one are usually mild. But when we checked the bigger picture (bond yields, borrowing costs for riskier companies, the dollar), today matches the mix that came before the deeper drops: a typical bottom around −18% instead of −12%. Only 8 past cases, so it's a warning light, not a forecast.
